Protect What Matters: Why Homeowners Should Regularly Check Their Fire Suppression Systems
As fire safety awareness grows, one of the most overlooked but vital components of a home’s defense is the fire suppression system. Whether it’s a sprinkler system, fire extinguishers, or integrated alarms, these tools are only effective if they’re properly maintained and regularly inspected.
Why It Matters
Fire suppression systems are designed to react instantly in the event of a fire—saving lives, property, and preventing devastating losses. However, like any home system, they require routine maintenance to ensure they function when needed. A clogged sprinkler head, expired extinguisher, or faulty alarm can mean the difference between minor damage and total destruction.
What Homeowners Should Do
Experts recommend homeowners take the following steps:
-
Inspect fire extinguishers monthly to ensure pressure gauges are in the green and the units are free from damage or corrosion.
- Test smoke and CO detectors at least once a month and replace batteries twice a year.
-
Schedule professional inspections of home sprinkler or suppression systems annually, or as recommended by the manufacturer.
- Keep systems accessible—avoid blocking sprinklers, extinguishers, or alarm panels with furniture or decorations.
Seasonal Reminder
Fall is an ideal time to check these systems as homeowners prepare for winter, when the risk of electrical fires and heating-related incidents tends to rise. With holiday cooking and heating systems in full use, being proactive can prevent tragedy.
Peace of Mind is PricelessInvesting a little time now in maintenance can mean peace of mind later. A properly maintained fire suppression system could be the most important safety feature in your home—make sure it’s ready when it counts.

Is Your Drinking Water System Ready for Fall?Time to Check Your Filters and Stay Safe
Clean, safe drinking water is something we often take for granted—until there’s a problem. As we head into the cooler months, now is the perfect time to check your home’s drinking water system and ensure your filters are up to date and functioning properly.
Over time, water filters can become clogged with sediment, minerals, and contaminants, which not only reduces water quality but can also put unnecessary strain on your system. If it’s been more than 6 months since your last filter change—or if you’re noticing changes in water taste, smell, or flow—it’s time for a check-up.
Here are a few tips for maintaining your drinking water system:
- Replace filters regularly according to the manufacturer’s recommendations (usually every 3 to 6 months).
-
Inspect your system for any leaks, cracks, or signs of wear.
- Flush the system after replacing filters to ensure clean water flow.
- Consider professional servicing if your system includes reverse osmosis, UV purification, or whole-home filtration.
Taking a few simple steps each season can help keep your water fresh, your appliances running efficiently, and your family safe. If you’re unsure about the condition of your system or need a referral for a trusted water specialist, here are a couple of vendors:

Think Before You Flush: Why “Flushable” Wipes Might Be Your Plumbing’s Worst Enemy
You know that satisfying moment when you toss a wipe into the toilet, flush, and it disappears? It’s deceptive. What looks like “gone” can lead to major plumbing headaches — both in your home and for the municipal sewer system. Let’s take a closer look at what’s really going on when you flush those so-called “flushable” wipes.
What’s the problem?
They don’t break down like toilet paper.
Most toilet papers are designed to disintegrate quickly once contact with water happens. “Flushable” wipes, however, are usually made of more durable materials — synthetic fibers, cellulose blends, sometimes plastics — so they stay intact much longer and don’t dissolve cleanly.
They snag, trap, and grow blockages.
Because wipes stay intact, they can catch on rough spots, bends, or irregularities in pipes. Over time, they accumulate grease, other debris, and more wipes — forming clogs or even “rag balls.” On a larger scale, these sticky messes help build upfatbergs, massive clogs made of fats, oils, wipes, and other trash that damage sewers.
They’re expensive—both for homeowners and cities.
A malfunction at a pumping station in Milwaukee, for instance, was tied to wipe buildup; fixing it costthousands of dollars. Municipalities spend millions every year removing wipe-based clogs from sewer systems. Even if you don’t immediately feel the effects, part of your taxes go toward undoing the damage.
Septic systems and wastewater treatment suffer too.
If your home is on a septic tank system, wipes can cause slower breakdown of solid waste and require more frequent pumping or even damage. And at water treatment plants, wipes surviving through the pipes can damage pumps, clog screens, and raise maintenance costs.
What do the experts say?
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends that people flush onlytoilet paper and human waste, not wipes or other non-flushable items — even if the packaging claims they are flushable.
Many local governments and utilities have issued warnings that there is reallyno such thing as a wipe that is truly flushable under typical plumbing or sewer conditions.
What Should You Do Instead?
- Only flush pee, poo, and toilet paper. Everything else goes in the trash.
- Keep a small waste bin by the toilet for wipes, paper towels, hygiene products, etc.
Consider alternatives:
- Soft toilet paper with higher quality or added moisture
- Bidets or handheld sprayers
The Bottom Line
What’s flushable isn’t always safe. The words “flushable” on a package may sound like a permission slip, but plumbing experts, environmental agencies, and municipalities are overwhelmingly telling us:don’t do it. The costs—clogs, repairs, environmental damage—are real. So before you flush, think: “Could this trash go somewhere else?” Save yourself (and your pipes) the trouble.
